Jos Ready to Host STAN
Conference
The Honourable Commissioner for Education in Plateau State,
Mr. Alex Chups, has pledged the
support of the Plateau State Government towards the successful
hosting of the 46th Annual Conference of the Association.
The Commissioner made the position known during a courtesy
call on him by the National Conference Planning Committee led by the
STAN President, Dr. Mamman Wasagu.
The
conference on the theme 'STM Education and Professionalism' is
expected to be declared open on Monday 15 August 2005 at 4.30p.m by
His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Chief
Joshua Dariye. The
opening ceremony slated for Hill Station Hotel, Jos will feature,
among others, the investiture of the Executive Governor as Patron of
STAN. Other conference
activities are scheduled for St. Louis College, Jos.
Attah
Supports Board Meeting
The
Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong
Victor Attah, provided financial and logistics support for
the National Executive Board Meeting of STAN which was held in Uyo
on Wednesday, 16 March, 2005. As
well as providing lodging, board and a dinner, Governor Attah made a
donation of one million naira to the Association.
Highlights of the opening ceremony of the meeting at Ibom
Hall, Uyo included the investiture of the Governor, who was
represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Education Mr. Donatus
E. Okon, as Patron of STAN.
Other
investiture ceremonies on State Governors performed this year are
those of Dr. Sam O. Egwu of Ebonyi State and Rev. Jolly Nyame of
Taraba State.

Highlights
a.
Mobil/STAN Science Projects/Quiz Competitions
The
National theme for projects is 'Waste Disposal Devices including
recycling of non-biogradable materials.' There will also be competitions in the free choice category.
Oral and written presentations (3 copies) will be required. In the
quiz competitions, questions will cover up to the SSII Curriculum in
Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Home
Economics, Mathematics (General/Further), Physical and Health
Education, Physics, and Technology. SSIII students are not to
participate in the competitions. Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited
has donated trophies for the competitions and is set to sponsor the
broadcasting of quiz competitions on the network service of Radio
Nigeria. Each State is to present a maximum of 4 students - 2 for
quiz and 2 for project.
b. Primary
Science Projects/Quiz Competitions
These
competitions will take place among primary school pupils who should
please be fully supported to the conference by State Primary
Education Boards. Each
State is to present a maximum of four pupils (two for quiz, and two
for projects).
c. Investiture
Ceremony
The
investiture ceremony of His
Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State as Patron of
STAN will be performed on Monday 15 August at 4.30p.m.

d. DSSE Award
Dr.
Dorayi Aminu will receive the Distinguished Service to Science
Education Award on Thursday 18
August.
e. STAN
Fellowship Award

Hogan, Mr. Awajiokinor
Mfiangh, and Mr.
Augustine Okeke will receive the FSTAN Award on Thursday 18 August.

This
Award will be made to the best
five branches of STAN in
2005. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday 18 August at 6.30p.m.

Ivowi Award for the Best Conference Paper
This
Award will be made to the 2005 recipient on Thursday 18 August at
6.30p.m.
h. STAN
President's Award
The
STAN President's Award will be made to the best science teacher in
2005. All State Chairs are expected to submit entries on or before
15 July, 2005.
i. Members'
Exhibition and poster session
There
will be opportunity for science teachers to exhibit teaching
materials and posters which they have personally made.

Award Scheme 2005
Information

1. The scheme
An award is
offered by CASTME for a project, which conveys the social and human
context of science technology and
mathematics. Awards will be given for projects which can have a
direct impact in the classroom on the teaching and learning of the
social and human context of science, technology and mathematics,
relevant to the local and regional way of life and the local
resources available.
2. Eligibility
Teachers and officials (advisers, inspectors, etc.)
working in primary, secondary and tertiary education are eligible to
enter. Individuals or syndicates may enter.
3. Topics
There are no set topics for the competition. Reports of
work carried out by the teacher or official should be based on
personal experience and should include a substantial account of
teaching and/or other educational work, such as curriculum
development or programmes of teacher training.
Projects based on ideas, proposals or general arguments,
which have not been tried out in practice, are not acceptable. Each
project must be the original work of the entrant and must not have
been published previously.
Please
note that CASTME reserves the right to publish winning entries in
their journal or associated publications either in part or in full.
4. Awards
The Awards will be as follows:

5. Judging
is based on the following criteria:
• evidence
of originality and creativity
• evidence
of use in practice and cost effectiveness (projects based on ideas,
proposals or general arguments which have not been tried out
are unacceptable)
• evidence
of evaluation of the idea or material in use
• evidence
of the social relevance of the project
• standards of
presentation, organisation and structure of the report
• overall
impressions of the project
6. Presentation
of projects entered
• Only
one project can be accepted from any one individual or syndicate.
• Projects
previously submitted to CASTME may not be re-submitted.
• The
project must be written in English.
• The
project must be written or typed on A4 or quarto sheets of paper,
and should not exceed 10,000 words in length.
• Photographs
and other illustrative material
should be included wherever relevant, together with any other
evidence that shows the ideas have been effective in practice.
Pupils work may be included when possible.
• Reference
should be made to the source of information or of original
experiments wherever this is necessary to enable
a proper assessment of proposed modifications.
NB: If
a substantial part of a project is being published or submitted as a
thesis, this should be mentioned on the top sheet of the entry.
7. Additional
ASE/CASTME Award: The Alexander Prize
A new award was launched in 2002, specifically for women
teachers working under difficult conditions. The award is named
after Alexander family who worked in science education in many
Commonwealth countries for over 50 years. It is supported by ASE,
the Association for Science Education.
In addition to the general CASTME Award criteria, the
Alexander Prize will be awarded to a woman, or group of women,
who has made a significant contribution to encouraging the
scientific, technological or mathematical education of girls or
women in a situation of scarce resources. The Prize is worth £350,
and, like the CASTME Awards, is made annually.
Appropriate entries for the CASTME Award scheme will in
addition be considered for the Alexander Prize. Applications for the
Alexander Prize may also be made in the form of an essay explaining
the reasons for the nomination, which may be of the author herself
or of some other woman or group.
8. Submission
of projects to the CASTME Award Scheme and Alexander Prize Projects
must be sent with the entry form before 1 September 2004. They
should be sent to:

• Entries
that are available in electronic format may be submitted by email,
to: castme@lect.org. Please put 'Entry for CASTME Award
Scheme' in the subject line.
• If
there is a British Council office in your country, your entry may be
taken or sent there, for onward transmission. Please make sure that
the London address of the CASTME Awards coordinator appears on the
envelope.
• Women
entrants also wishing their project to be considered for the
Alexander Prize should indicate this in a covering letter.
• Separate
essay entries for the Alexander Prize should also be sent to the Co-ordinator
of the Award Scheme. Address as above.
