Mr.
Patrick Etim Inyang
(1958-2005)
A
tribute by
Science Teachers
Association of Nigeria
Mr. Patrick Etim Inyang, 47,
joined the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) as a
member in 1985. A
specialist in Electronics Technology, Mr. Inyang taught at various
times at Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada and Government
Secondary School, Karshi, all in the Federal Capital Territory.
His last station was Government Technical and Science
College, Garki, Abuja where he served as Vice Principal (Academics).
On 21 July,
2001, Mr. Inyang took over the mantle of leadership of STAN as the
Abuja Branch Chair having been so elected by its members.
Two years later in 2003, in his capacity as branch chair, he
chaired the 43rd Annual Conference of the Association which was held
at the International Conference Centre as well as Government Science
and Technical College, Garki, Abuja.
The conference which had an international programme of
activities by the African Branch of the Commonwealth Association of
Science, Technology, and Mathematics Educators (CASTME), was one of
the best organised in the history of the Association.
Much of the credit for that achievement was due to Mr.
Inyang's sterling leadership qualities especially his ability to
carry people along at every stage of the planning and execution of
the programme.
If the rapport
with STAN branch members was excellent,
Inyang's relationship with government agencies especially the
Department of Education, Abuja was very cordial leading to a lot of
attention by government to the requests from the branch.
The Abuja Branch under his tenure was among the most active
in terms of membership and professional development activities.
Mr. Inyang's
professional success was traceable to his personal qualities.
He was always cheerful and friendly to all who came his way.
He was humane and kind.
Mr. Inyang was always ready to listen to suggestions even if
those were in conflict with his position.
Such open mindedness paid off in several areas as he was
able, for instance, to secure the support for the Abuja Branch from
several organisations such as the Federal Ministry of Education,
National Universities Commission, National Commission for Colleges
of Education, and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development
Council.
In all these,
Mr. Inyang never sought any public acknowledgement of his efforts
even as the commendations came unsolicited anyway.
He had a good sense of humour and enjoyed socialising and
good company. His
sudden death is a great shock to his family and many friends, and a
deep and serious loss for STAN.
Our prayers at this difficult time are with his wife, Irene,
and all family members. He
will be sorely missed.
We wish him a
very sweet repose and a guaranteed rest in the Lord's bosom.
Dr. Mamman Wasagu, FSTAN
President
